You make today better!🤎

Did you know that September is Suicide Awareness Month? If not, now you do, and today, I’m particularly excited to be featuring a good friend of mine, Janemy, Model and Founder of The Sunrise Mindet, an initiative that later paved way to the #YouMakeTodayBetter Campaign.

The #YouMakeTodayBetter Campaign is targeted to people with suicidal ideations and the general public to create awareness on suicidal prevention.

Meet Janemy Obiny, Model and Founder of The Sunrise Mindset.

Janemy (or Amy, as most people refer to her), launched this particular campaign in September 2020. The campaign usually runs through September, this being the suicide awareness and prevention month. Hence this month, her campaign turns one!

The aim of #YouMakeTodayBetter is to first, pass on a message to people with suicidal ideations to know that they matter, that they make today better, that their lives have so much purpose and that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Secondly, the campaign aims at educating the general public on suicidal tendencies by educating them on causes, facts and ways to help people who think that suicide is the only way out to whatever they may be going through.

Fact Checker: According to an article by The World Health Organization (2021), some of the most clearly stipulated facts are as follows:

  • “More than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year.”
  • “For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population.”
  • “Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds.”
  • “77% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.”
  • “Ingestion of pesticide, hanging and firearms are among the most common methods of suicide globally.”

With such alarming statistics, it is imperative to then, spread awareness to as many people as possible. In Amy’s words, it is “crucial to first, narrow down on the stigma and spread awareness. Rarely do we find the media highlighting ways to help with Suicide, and in as much as it is not talked about, it is also a prevalent issue.”

When people are educated on ways to prevent suicide, they are then better equipped to help people who want to commit suicide by distracting them from their challenges, no matter how big.

In addition to this, when the suicide stigma gap is narrowed down, people contemplating committing suicide are more encouraged to speak up and seek help. Awareness on suicide prevention liberates and gives people a safe space to talk about why they’d want to commit suicide, and that is the first and most crucial step towards helping people with suicidal ideations out.
