What I learnt: #MissingOut.
“I’m so sorry, you couldn’t make it past vetting 😔 ,” were the words my house matron met me with on this fateful evening after school that day. And those words, hurt more than mere words could even express.
Discovery for me hit different during my high school days. I had no interest, zero zeal, absolutely no longing for fun or funkies, and all I lived for were club meetings and career days. I’ve always craved development avenues and opportunities from a young age. I was okay missing out on fun, but I was by then, a member of two of some of the most important clubs in High School: Environment, and President’s Award. That was all that mattered to me.
Environment was the most important for me out of these two clubs. I had a perfect reputation in the club and just before proceeding to my final year, I had won Best Environmentalist Award, and that was a huge deal! I craved and eagerly waited for all the opportunities that came from winning that award. The biggest of these was being the Environment Cop once I got to Fourth Form.
At that point, it’s important to note that I was at my worst when it came to academics. And one couldn’t be a cop if they weren’t good academically. I knew my chances of getting through were slim, but the go-getter in me pushed more than the voice in me telling me to let it slide. Atleast if I didn’t get it, I had to atleast not get it having tried. So on one quiet evening, I wrote my application letter and handed it over to my matron to pass it on for vetting.
AFTER REJECTION:
We have to learn to be okay when life tears us away from the things we want the most. This incident was one of the most painful, but also, one of the most transformative.
LESSONS LEARNT:
☆ Learn to be okay with whatever happens in your life – You may not understand what is happening, but trust that God has a plan. Man may manipulate situations, but God ALWAYS has the final say and things work in your life with God’s best interest over your life.
☆ You won’t always get everything that you want in this life, and that’s okay too – Regardless, always appreciate the process. I love how Former Miss Universe Catriona Gray says this: that If you get too caught up in wanting to win, what happens if you don’t? You end up miserable. So regardless of whether you win or not, are you enjoying the process? The fact that you’ve gone that far in wanting that something means you’re great in your own capacity already, so don’t forget the little things that matter.
☆ Don’t stop fighting – If it sets a passion in your heart, go back to the drawing board, make yourself better then seek similar opportunities. Refuse to give up, and only then, can you have the world as your stage.
☆ It’s a REDIRECTION, not a DENIAL – The opportunities that will come after you afterwards, will be much more fun, worth it and life changing. However, for this to manifest in your life, you have to be positive, of the right attitude and most importantly, patient. Always trust the process.
In your life, you are never denied, only redirected.
