Qualities to Nurture in Children Ministry Teachers.

Sunday school teachers must never lose sight of how significant their role is. They need to teach The Bible carefully so as not to lead children into error or misunderstanding.

Teaching children is both a privilege and a responsibility: a privilege to be able to teach children about God, and a responsibility to teach faithfully.

That said, should you want to recruit new teachers for your ministry, here are some of the qualities you should look for, and aim to nurture:

What qualities should a Sunday School Teacher exude?

1. THEY SHOULD BE GODLY MODELS.

As a Sunday School Teacher, they are a significant adult in the lives of the children. Children will look upto them as models, and take up some behaviours from them.

They should be GODLY MODELS.

2. THEY SHOULD BE COMMITTED.

They need to show commitment to the ministry, children and fellow teachers. Commitment is observed by how punctual they are, and how well they teach the kids weekly. A serious teacher knows that this is a long-term commitment and works towards building a good relationship with the children.

They should SHOW COMMITMENT.

3. THEY SHOULD BE CARING.

Outside class interactions, children can sense whether a teacher is showing genuine care and interest through small things such as ability to initiate discussions, taking interest in and remembering their interests(for example, who likes to play what game) and remembering important events to the children such as their birthdays.

They should SHOW CARE.

4. THEY SHOULD BE PREPARED.

A serious teacher prepares for the week’s lesson in advance. They should show readiness for the children when they arrive. It is important and it shows the children that they are important to you and worth preparing for, consequently, strengthening the teacher-children bond.

PREPPING is key!

5. THEY SHOULD SHOW ENTHUSIASM.

They should have energy and zeal while teaching the children. Energy is contagious and the teacher sets the mood for the class. If the teacher is dull, the class is dull. Teachers should learn how to break long sessions through activities such as singing and dance.

And I say it again… ENERGY and ENTHUSIASM!

6. THEY SHOULD BE PRAYERFUL.

They should be consistent seekers of God, for it is God who helps in teaching. They should pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit and also pray for the children’s understanding. A KidsMin teacher cannot survive in the lack of prayer and constantly seeking God.

Last but not least… they should be PRAYERFUL!
