Trusting through the seasons of life

I first tried modeling while in High School (Kenya High School). In my days, for one to vie for the coveted Miss BOMA title, your housemates had to vote for you to represent the house and compete at the finals. I remember losing at house level, and feeling so sad for even thinking I had a shot at it.

Then I went to High School 2 (Anestar Girls Nakuru). Everyone used to look at me like something that had dropped out of heaven. People literally used to gasp when I passed by them. For some reason, they used to find me pretty, which did a lot for my self esteem considering my past high school experiences were not so great and my self esteem was really low. I remember my closest friends in that school urging me to compete for the Miss Anestar title, but remembering my experience at BOMA, imposter syndrome won the day. I decided to sit it out.

Then I went to campus, and on my first day I saw the then Miss PAC University, and something in my heart told me I had to give a shot at that crown. And so that whole year, I embarked on serious preparation… I read blogs, watched YouTube Videos, learnt all about pageantry… I even took notes. I was bad at walking in heels. I remember practising over the long holidays, twisting my ankle or falling down so many times I almost gave up. But with the right support, I contested for the title of Miss PAC Uni in my second year, and won. Winning too came with its fair share of challenges.

People see the wins and dub it an “overnight success”. Nothing good in this life is an overnight success.

“Your calling is going to crush you.
.
If you’re called to mend the brokenhearted, you’re going to wrestle with broken-heartedness.
.
If you’re called to prophesy, you’re going to struggle to control your mouth.
.
If you’re called lay hands, you will battle spiritual viruses.
.
If you are called to preach and to teach the gospel, you will be sifted for the wisdom that anoints your message.
.
If you are called to empower, your self-esteem will be attacked, your successes will be hard fought.
.
Your calling will come with cups, thorns and sifting that are necessary for your mantle to be AUTHENTIC, HUMBLE and POWERFUL. Your crushing won’t be easy because your assignment is not easy. Your oil is not cheap.”

Patrick Weaver

During your seasons of hardships, struggle, trials and temptation… learn to be still and ask yourself, “What am I meant to learn from this situation?” As I’ve learnt how to trust through the seasons of my life, here are three key lessons I’ve picked along my journey:

It’s easy to get distracted by the circumstances of your situation. If you want to survive, focus on the circumstances. But if you want to thrive, focus on the lesson, the journey, the long term – This is the mindset difference between ordinary and extraordinary. “In each tear there’s a lesson, Makes you wiser than before, Makes you stronger than you know! And each tear brings you closer to your dreams, No mistake, no heartbreak…. Can take away what YOU’RE MEANT TO BE!!!” ~Mary J Blige~

Everything starts from the mind – check the thoughts you’re entertaining during trying seasons of your life. There’s a law that says, life can’t be too good, or too bad for any one person. It’s just the balance of life… some seasons are good, some are heartbreaking. Regardless, all these seasons have something they teach us. Learn to control your mouth… do not be the one to get so discouraged that you utter negative words over your situation or life. Things eventually get better… learn to be patient. That season you think you can’t survive, will pass too.

In every low season, there’s something about you that gets better – Hardships are great, they teach us more about life than we ever learnt in any class we ever attended, thus, the saying, “Experience is the best teacher”. For you to achieve the purpose for which God has set for you on this earth, you will face hardships necessary for you to achieve it. Don’t give up. In every given season, there’s always something God has placed in your hands. Find what that is, do your best with it and I GUARANTEE you it will multiply. Keep believing in yourself even when everything happening around you strongly suggests otherwise.

Mungu halali. I’m rooting for you! ✨
