24 Resolution Ideas for 2024 (Part Two)
With 2024 now here with us, this is a season where most of us will be taking stock of what we were able to achieve in the calendar year 2023, as well as planning for what we hope our 2024 will be like. That said, here are 24 ideas you can consider incorporating into your 2024 routine. (Incase you missed out on Part One that comes with the first list of 12 ideas, please catch up here and feel free to leave a comment!)

As the year goes by and the busy-ness of life kicks in, purpose to be intentional with the people you love most. If you must, be as intentional as setting aside a particular time every week just to check in with them. Let this not be the year where “things just got weird and you stopped talking to so and so” yet you never initiated communication. Be the first to reach out, check up on them and if they need help, gracefully offer it. Attend their functions and events. Support their ventures and businesses! However, be mindful so that it’s not a one-way street (especially if you’re naturally a giver, people can take without limits). Be sure to pour your time, effort and resources into people who’d do the same for you.

Make it a habit to dress how you want to be addressed. A resolution along creating a signature look could probably mean curating your wardrobe so that you only have fits that you love and look good for your body type. A good place to source for ideas would be Pinterest, or YouTube. Fashion Vloggers such as The Style Insider, Christie Ressel and Shea Whitney helped me out on my journey towards creating my signature style and who knows, you might learn a few things from their channels as well. Apart from dressing, work on having elegant jewelry pieces or accessories, and most importantly, don’t forget to work on having a signature scent!

As you think of resolutions, I want you to think along the lines of, “How can I strengthen my relationship with My Maker and how can I grow closer to Him?” Write down all the ways you feel are practical enough for you to do this. The next step would be to find somebody who can help you keep accountable towards doing those very things you’ve listed for yourself. Another way you can work on your spiritual life is subscribing to Christian Content in the social media spaces you spend the most time in. Some of my personal favourites are Girls Gone Bible, CITAM Church Online and Mighty Pursuit. Last but not least, surround yourself with Godly community, such as Church, Bible Study Groups, Worship Concerts, just to mention a few.

What habits have you noticed in the past about yourself, that you know that if you completely got rid of them, you’d be a much better person? For me, it’s snoozing the alarm, sleeping in and waking up 3hrs past my intended time (yikes!!!). If I could conquer the hold that morning sleep has on me, I’d be way better because that would mean having more hours to my day, consequently, allowing me to do more or be more productive. I’d like for you who’s reading this, to look deeply within. Have a meeting with yourself and conduct a SWOT Analysis. No one’s perfect but there’s always room to be better. Be honest with yourself about the things that you consider negative, and work on a strategy towards improvement.

I don’t know about you but for me, I find podcasts veeery convenient because I’m able to get information on the go. The beauty about podcasts is, of course, that you only need to listen in, as opposed to watching. This allows flexibility to do other things so you’re easily able to multitask when you engage with podcasts. This is something I have been doing for the past 2 or so years, and it’s definitely a habit I’m carrying on in 2024 and beyond. If you have never listened to a podcast, I highly recommend you start listening to podcasts this year! A few of my favourites in no particular order: Sour Loss Sweet Lessons by Deshauna Barber, Girls Gone Bible by Angela and Arielle, The Personal Branding Podcast by Olive Gachara, The Abundant Self Podcast by Sharon Chebaibai and Date Yourself Instead by Lyss Boss.

A wise person once taught me that, to advance in life, you need these 4 types of mentors; spiritual, finance, work/career, and relationship mentors. I have found these to be true because with adulting, you are only as good as the people you choose to surround yourself with, and you can only go further by stepping on the shoulders of those who can see farther than you can. This wise person went on to emphasize that these shouldn’t be online mentors either, but people you can physically have conversations with on a regular. I have not been the best at having these 4 mentors either, but I do acknowledge the truth in this. While I do not have a mentor for all these 4 aspects, I choose to only have 1 with whom I feel free and comfortable sharing all my private details with.
There is a set criterion for identifying people you can walk with as mentors, which I might tackle in a different blog post. But for now, here’s my advice: seek all 4 mentors, but if you sincerely feel that’s too much, at least have 1 who can guide you through most of these aspects if not all. And no, for this to be effective, a mentor shouldn’t be your mom or dad. Find someone who isn’t family.

Wherever God plants you on this earth, if you are in a position to, volunteer or serve in whatever capacity you can. It is honorable, it is beautiful, it is noble, and God rewards you tenfold! Whenever I think of the unique skills and talents God graciously gave to us that we may serve Him on earth, I am always reminded of the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. Let’s be better stewards of our talents in 2024 and beyond, for we will be required to account for them someday. Today is the first day of the rest of your life, so, will you make your talents count towards a positive contribution?

This goes to those of us who long for long term relationships and healthy marriages… whether single, taken or married. If you are single, take time to work on yourself so that when the one God has kept for you finally comes, they find you healthy and balanced. Singleness is a good time to reflect on who you are without another person being in your space, and gives you time to work on your health, wealth, mindset, all-round skills, insecurities, past traumas and baggage. This should be a time dedicated towards serious self development activities, both for yourself, and in preparation for meeting your future partner. If you are taken, work on structures and foundations that will hold the next level of your relationship (marriage) firmly. If you are married, do not settle. Constantly grow, stay well informed and knowledgeable, and learn new things, so that you are always a breath of fresh insights and perspectives for your partner, and can explore various ways on how to pursue life together.

Learn the art of not only being good at communication, but being effective at communication. This applies for both personal and professional settings. In personal settings, take into consideration that human beings are emotional creatures, hence the way you choose to communicate, or your lack thereof, can deeply harm relationships. In professional settings, it’s become even more important to learn how to communicate, as we now live in times where the work environment has evolved into WFH Roles, and social media is gradually becoming key in communicating. Manpower Group shares 10 Ways to improve your communication skills in the workplace in this article. You may also follow communication experts like Vinh Giang who share a ton of resources on how to communicate better.

Challenge yourself to work on something consistently this year. For me, last year I made a commitment to myself that on the 11th of every month, I’d publish a new blog post, and that came to pass. The thing about long term projects is that beyond the project, you knowingly / unknowingly build positive habits, like consistency and resilience to follow through with the project, no matter what. Such projects also help you exercise delayed gratification better because you are able to understand that good things take time, effort and smart work. If your long term project is growing a following on Youtube this year, you will learn that it will possibly take more than a few good videos to get you to the numbers you want. Between where you are now, and where you want to get to, will be hours of research, hard work, and failed attempts. If you choose not to give up, this is how you’ll build your muscles of resilience. The rewards at the end of long term projects are strangely satisfying too!

When all is said and done, don’t forget to build gratitude habits… such as journalling or keeping a gratitude jar near you and updating it daily!! Life, being life, will have its highs and lows… nevertheless, keep the faith. The beauty about owning your journey is that one day when you look back at everything you’ve been through, it will all make perfect sense. So even on the days you are not really feeling your element, or that spark that makes you who you are, remember that the star inside you has not stopped shining. Be grateful and keep going.
